About The Museum
When was the Museum formed?
The Museum was founded in 1974 and has occupied the basement of the Old Council Hall in Market Street since 1992.
Who runs the Museum and how is it funded?
The Salcombe Museum Society is a registered charity (no. 268909) and is run entirely by volunteers. All our stewards volunteer their time and receive no pay, and all our funds come from donations and membership subscriptions. The only exceptions to this are the occasional grants we receive from public bodies to improve our displays and conserve our collections.

Can school and group visits be arranged?
Schools, official groups of young people, local societies and clubs are welcome to contact the Museum to arrange visits to suit their interests. School visits can be tailored to specific Key Stage requirements. Visits can often be arranged outside normal opening hours. To arrange your visit please email the Museum.
Is photography allowed?
Yes, in moderation. Please turn off flash. ‘Professional’ photography (e.g. with use of tripod) is not permitted.
Are there any access restrictions?
The Museum is on one floor at ground level and is accessible by visitors in wheelchairs (don’t be put off by our basement address)! There are no toilet facilities but public toilets are available in nearby Whitestrand Car Park.
Do you have a research service?
We get many enquiries from people researching local or family history, particularly those with ancestors who served on Salcombe ships. We always try to help where we can, but we may ask for a donation to Museum funds if our response is likely to require more than an hour or so of research. Email your enquiry or hand it in at the Museum when you visit.
