The first two albums in our exciting new online Virtual Collection have been added to our website at: Virtual Collection | Salcombe Maritime Museum. The work on preparing the Virtual Collection has been undertaken as part of our National Heritage Lottery Funded ‘Dynamic Collections Project’. Over the last year or so we have been progressively digitising the objects in our collection and creating object data sheets for posting in albums. The first two albums are: ‘Wreck and Rescue’ and ‘The Jack Needham ‘Ship in a Bottle’ Collection’. When selected, the albums open in Google Photos. Over the coming months we hope to build up the collection with many more albums providing a unique and easily accessible educational resource.

SIGNALLING ON LAND AND SEA -hands on activities sending top secret messages and breaking codes For this Half term’s ‘Curious Club’ we will be looking at different ways seafarers send signals to each other at sea and on land, for maritime safety. We’ll be considering how this has changed over time using examples of instances, in our local history, where these have saved lives or prevented disasters. We’ll start at the museum using models, handling objects and engaging with a talk by our Chairman, Roger Barrett. Then, we’ll be venturing over Cliff House gardens and Salcombe Yacht Club to try out some of these methods, through games. We’ll be working in teams to send each other safety messages, distress signals and break some TOP SECRET codes. See you there! Numbers are limited, please email events@salcombemuseum.org.uk to reserve your spaces

You are invited to join us for our second annual Sneak Peek on Sunday 16th February 2025. This special open afternoon provides exclusive access for those living in the South Hams to see behind the scenes at their local maritime museum. We know it can be tough to visit local attractions once the season is in full swing and so this is the perfect opportunity to spend a couple of hours exploring our galleries before the hustle and bustle begins. Inside you will find a treasure trove of models, paintings, photographs and artefacts which tell the story of Salcombe’s links with ships and the sea from ancient times to the Second World War. You will also be able to see the newest additions to our collection that are on display for the first time. This includes two portraits of the Salcombe schooner Speedy, two Spanish coins thought to be from the Spanish Armada ship wrecked at Hope Cove as well as two Bronze Age pots of Minoan origin that were found nearby. It is also a great opportunity to collect your copy of the SE50 Activity Book with 50 things to do in Salcombe and to learn about our new […]
