With the help of a grant from the AIM Pilgrim Trust Collections Care Scheme volunteers at Salcombe Maritime Museum have now completed a scheme to improve the conditions in which the collection is kept. The collection is housed in the basement of the old Council Hall and, in the past, has suffered from environmental problems including damp. In September 2021 we applied for a Collection Care Grant after having first obtained an AIM/Pilgrim Trust Grant for a Collection Care Audit by a professional conservator. The audit set out clear recommendations on the measures required to eliminate UV light in the museum and ensure that relative humidity and temperature levels fall within recommended standards. The Collection Care Grant, which we were awarded in November 2021, provided the means of implementing those measures. With the £1871 grant we were able to purchase two temperature & relative humidity dataloggers, a new Low Energy Dehumidifier and twelve Humidity Control cassettes and sachets. UV film was fitted to all external windows and a formal training session in collection care was held for our volunteers in the museum by a collection’s professional. Thanks to the grant we have now eliminated UV light and are well on the way to solving our problem with damp.
