Thanks to a £1500 grant from the Association of Independent Museums and the Pligrim Trust, 8 historically significant iron objects in the museum’s collection have now been restored by Peter Meehan, a specialist accredited metals conservator. The objects, which had been showing signs of active corrosion, include cannon and musket shot and an anchor from three 18th century coastal wrecks, a 19th century portable forge and a 20th century rocket line throwing gun. Most of them had been exposed to sea salt during their history. Loose dirt and rust layers were carefully removed and and the objects given a protective wax coating. Instruction in the prevention of further corrosion will ensure that the objects remain in good condition in years to come.
